Immersion – Then and Now:
Taking a Deep Dive into „ORIGINS“ at Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig
Immersive experiences are captivating audiences around the globe. “ORIGINS – Life’s Epic Journey” at Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig is a powerful example of this evolving art form, merging science, art, and virtual reality into a truly multi-sensory encounter.
Where it all began: A personal gateway into immersive media art
My fascination with interactive media art began in 1997 during my very first visit to the ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. That moment was a formative experience—a turning point that sparked a lifelong passion for immersive storytelling. Back then, I discovered the work of artists like Jeffrey Shaw, Bill Seaman, and Nam June Paik. Their groundbreaking installations deeply influenced how I think about audience engagement—something we at vm-people now apply in our work with virtual reality brand experiences.

Immersive exhibitions are reaching the mainstream
A pioneer in Germany’s immersive scene, Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig opened its doors in 2016. Since then, the venue has hosted innovative productions like: The Wonderland of Alice, GENESIS, Hundertwasser – The Art of the Visionary. Now, with ORIGINS – Life’s Epic Journey, the team has launched its first in-house production—a visually stunning experience that premiered at SXSW 2025 as part of the XR Expo Showcase.
